ANN/THE STAR – Malaysian artiste Liza Hanim confronted a social media user who had made derogatory comments about her physical appearance, as reported by Harian Metro.
The publication stated that a recent comment from a social media user suggested that the 43-year-old Liza was lagging behind in her career due to her perceived lack of looks despite her strong vocal abilities.
On September 25, Liza shared a screenshot on her Instagram account, revealing offensive remarks made by the netizen about her skin and nose. The same netizen drew comparisons between Liza’s appearance and that of Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, asserting that Siti’s success was attributed to her physical appearance.
Feeling the need to address the issue, Liza penned a lengthy statement in which she expressed gratitude for what Allah the Almighty has blessed her with and reiterated that she doesn’t care about what others think as long as she has her family’s support.
“Manners are more important than looks. I’m not affected by these criticisms but I think that this culture has gone too far.
“I sometimes wonder what the person writing these kinds of things look like,” she wrote, adding that the netizen was inconsiderate and insensitive.
Liza then concluded her post with a message urging everyone who has received similar comments before to “stay strong” and to do whatever makes them happy.
“We (need to) continuously be grateful to Allah the Almighty for everything we have been blessed with. #ImNotPrettyButImHappy,” she wrote.
Liza’s post has amassed over 5,500 likes at press time. It also received the support of local celebrities – including singers Salamiah Hassan and Aisha Retno, actress Azira Shafinaz, and Siti herself.
“The comments made by (the netizen) clearly shows their unkind personality. Never touch on someone’s physical appearance because no one is perfect.
“I’m appalled by netizens who think they are good enough to judge but have instead shown how silly they are,” Siti wrote, adding that Liza has her full support. – Anndrea A Webber
