Litterbugs slapped with fines

An individual and a restaurant chain were issued with compound fines by the Tutong District Office’s Enforcement Unit in two separate cases for littering in public areas, a violation under the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021.

According to the Tutong District Office, the restaurant was issued with a BND200 fine while the individual was fined BND100. They are required to settle the fines within seven days.

The failure to settle the fine by an individual will result in the case being forwarded to the courts. If guilty, the individual will be imposed a fine of at least BND1,000 and not more than BND3,000 for the first offence and at least BND3,000 and not more than BND9,000, imprisonment of not more than six months or both for subsequent offences.

A corporate body failing to settle the fine within seven days will be brought to court and can face a fine of BND2,000 and not more than BND10,000 for the first offence and a fine of at least BND10,000 and not more than BND30,000, imprisonment of not more than 12 months or both for subsequent offences.
