Litterbugs slapped with compound fines

Ten companies and three individuals were slapped with compound fines by the Law Enforcement Division of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department from March to May for violating Section 12 (1), Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021 of illegally disposing rubbish in public areas and walkway.

According to the Law Enforcement Division of the BSB Municipal Department, the compound fine totalled BND6,100.

Under Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021 chapter 30, the rate of compound for any individual or corporate body issued on the offences under section 12 or any violation is not more than BND1,000 for individual and not more than BND2,000 for corporate body.

Failure to settle the fine will result in the case being brought to court.

An individual found guilty will face a fine between BND1,000 and BND3,000 for the first offence, between BND3,000 and BND9,000, imprisonment of no more than six months, or both, for subsequent offences.

A company found guilty will face a fine between BND2,000 and BND10,000 for the first offence, and between BND10,000 and BND30,000, imprisonment of no more than 12 months, or both, for subsequent offences.

Fines must be settled at the Finance Division of the BSB Municipal Department within seven days.

The department said it will not hesitate to take action on any violation under Section 12 (1), Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021.
