Litterbugs fined nearly BND4K last month

Compound fines worth BND3,700 were issued by the Law Enforcement Division of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department last month, the agency revealed.

Fourteen individuals and six companies were fined for disposing rubbish in public areas, a violation under Section 12, Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021.

Offenders are advised to settle their fines at the Finance Division on the third floor of the BSB Municipal Department within seven days.

Meanwhile, the Tutong District Office Enforcement Unit issued a compound fine to a company for throwing rubbish in a public area. The company has been imposed with a BND500 fine under the Act and ordered to settle the fine within seven days.

Individuals can be subjected to a compound fine of not exceeding BND1,000 while for corporate bodies, compound fines can be imposed not exceeding BND2,000.

Failure to settle the fine will result in the case being brought to court.

An individual found guilty will face a fine between BND1,000 and BND3,000 for the first offence, between BND3,000 and BND9,000, imprisonment of no more than six months, or both, for subsequent offences.

A company found guilty will face a fine between BND2,000 and BND10,000 for the first offence, and between BND10,000 and BND30,000, imprisonment of no more than 12 months, or both, for subsequent offences.
