Legislative Council to begin tomorrow

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will officiate the opening ceremony of the 17th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting tomorrow at the Legislative Council Building.

LegCo Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib will chair the session assisted by Clerk to the LegCo Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Judin bin Haji Asar and Deputy Clerk to the LegCo Rose Aminah binti Haji Ismail.

The LegCo meeting is entering its 17th year since its inception in 2004, and will discuss and approve the 2021 Supply Bill for 2021/2022, which will go through three stages before being adopted and gazetted for use starting April 1.

The LegCo has become a strategic platform to deliberate on matters pertaining to the people and country’s interests. LegCo members will play a role as the people’s voice in discussing and reviewing government policies for the well-being of the citizens of Brunei Darussalam.

The council was established according to Section 23 of the 1959 Brunei Constitution and the members appointed according to Section 24.

It was dissolved in 1984 and reconvened on September 25, 2004, in conjunction with the 58th birthday of His Majesty on July 15 that year.

There are 36 LegCo members comprising ex-officio members, persons bestowed with titles, persons who have achieved excellence and district representatives.

In accordance with the safety guidelines, the public can watch the LegCo meeting in a limited capacity.

Daily deliberations can be followed via Radio Television Brunei (RTB) channels at 9pm and after the 10pm news.
