THE Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA) Brunei organised a lecture at the Betabur Hall of the Ministry of Development yesterday.

The lecture, which focussed on coated steel material selection and the Industrialised Building System (IBS) method, was divided into two sessions.

The first dealt with the topic ‘Coated Steel Material Selection for Roof/Wall Cladding Application & Case Studies’.

This first session was presented by Technical Marketing Engineer at the NS BlueScope Malaysia Rocky Shet, who spoke on the material selection of coated steel for roof and wall cladding application, and specifically on what makes a coated steel last long in tropical weather.

He also shared some case studies of various types of coated steel in different types of buildings, while also highlighting the aspects of coated steel which are important in such applications.

The second session highlighted the topic ‘IBS adoption: Structural Steel Decking and Cold Formed Lightweight Steel Framing System’. It was presented by Technical and Design Manager at the NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Suraya Johari.

In her presentation, she spoke on the IBS method, whereby building components are manufactured at factories or off-site, transported and then assembled into a structure with minimum activities on site.

It was shared that this allows construction to be completed in a shorter time frame with minimum activities at the construction site that leads to significant construction savings.

The technical session primarily focussed on discussing the steel structural decking in composite slab design and permanent formwork design as a replacement to conven-tional formworks.

The session also discussed the cold formed lightweight steel framing system that satisfies IBS requirements.
