Over 150 participants engaged with government ministers on current issues during a hybrid town hall at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday.

The Youth Town Hall Brunei, themed ‘Leading in Times of Uncertainty’ gave youth both in-person and online a chance to interact with Cabinet ministers.

Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman shared with the youth that the core principles of the government are to uphold the welfare of the people, development of the nation and providing education.

He also discussed his career and leadership journey as well as dakwah among youth, conservation of national values and leadership transitions in the past and in the recent time of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar emphasised the importance of resilience and positivity. “There will always be challenges,” said the minister.

“How you overcome these challenges is what will fuel your life.”

The minister also shared his experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of transparency and planning ahead.

One example is the daily press conference, which helps the sharing of correct information quickly to counter a predicted rise in fake news and misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

He also shared and discussed his career and leadership journey in the medical field and civil service while emphasising on the importance of mental health, time management and work-life balance as a leader.

The Youth Town Hall Brunei is held in conjunction with the National Youth Day, with its third edition organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Young Professionals Network (YPN) Brunei.

“Times of uncertainty and crisis are often times of reckoning and a chance to reflect and learn valuable lessons as well as uncover new opportunities,” said the YPN in a statement, adding that the theme called for youth to overcome the disruptions brought by COVID-19.
