    Leadership course strengthens skills, ties

    Thirty-two members of the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) 1102 Rover Scouts Crew attended the Sekapur Sireh course and the vigil ceremony while an investiture ceremony for a new Rover Scout member was also conducted at Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam (OBBD), Batang Duri Camp, Temburong District recently.

    The main purpose of following the Sekapur Sireh course, conducted by the OBBD, was to form the attributes of tenacity and self-resilience.

    It also aimed at focusing on the mentality of the UNISSA Rover Scout members in facing challenges outside their comfort zone and producing quality members of UNISSA scouts with the mental and physical strength to overcome physical challenges and be guided so that they can do charity and community work. Among the activities were discussion sessions and presentations in small group activities. Also included were strengthening skills in building self-confidence to face challenges which included first aid briefings, confidence activities while in the water, ‘flying fox’, basic lessons on compass and map reading, jungle trekking from Batang Duri Camp to Kabun Camp for a distance of six kilometres (km) and the return journey via kayaking and rafting for a distance of seven km in the Temburong River from Kabun Camp back to Batang Duri Camp.

    At the end of the course, 19 UNISSA Rover Scouts Crew members and two members of the Temburong District Rover Scout Open Crew underwent the process of getting to know each other before being officially appointed as a member of the rover scouts. In conjunction with the Day of Action celebration, members of UNISSA Scouts also carried out student service work by conducting community service activities by erecting a kayak landmark at the OBBD entrance gate. – Fadhil Yunus
