Laksamana College of Business (LCB) were crowned champions of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Football Championship among higher learning institutions after a 2-0 victory against UBD in a thrilling final at the Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.
Goals from Muhd Kasyfi Shafi’e Abdul Ade Rozli and Muhammad Nazhan bin Zulkiflie sent LCB into dreamland and eventually lifted them to the sought-after title.
The best player also went to team captain Mohammad Hirzy Zulfaqar bin Mahzan of LCB in recognition of his stellar performance while Mohd Syazwan bin Mohd Rahim was named the best goalkeeper.
The prize presentation ceremony also witnessed the tournament’s top scorer being awarded.
Meanwhile, Politeknik Brunei (PB) had earlier secured third place after a 4-1 victory over Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) in a playoff.
The Batu Satu-outfit exacted redemption and spectacularly addressed psychological concern owing from a 1-0 defeat in the group stage against the tournament hosts with an assured performance worthy of victory.
However, LCB appeared fired up in their quest for the title following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over the KUPU SB in the semi-final. The higher learning institute had the wisdom of renowned coach Haji Omar bin Haji Jamil to thank for and the move had reaped its rewards after transforming them as a championship-winning side.
In the semi-final against KUPU SB, LCB goalkeeper made the crucial stop in the penalty shoot-out to help his team into the title decider.
The tournament, which commenced on June 14, initially began with the participation of 10 higher learning institute teams with all matches being played at Field ‘A’ of the UBD Sports Complex.
Vice-Chancellor Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz presented the prizes to the winners.
