Zul Hilmi bin Haji Rosli closed with four birdies with a gross score of 68 to secure triumph in the Laksamana College of Business (LCB) Charity Golf Tournament 2021 at the RBA Golf Club in Berakas yesterday.
The tournament was contested in a system 36 and strokeplay format. The newly crowned winner champion shook off nerves before settling into the game as patience drove him to victory.
“I had a solid round. I started off a bit shaky but I managed to recover. I was just taking each shot at a time and visualising my shots,” said Zulhilmi in an interview with the Bulletin.
“Today being patient was key and not getting ahead of myself. I have a tendency to get too temperamental but I’m very happy with my round today.”
The national golfer overcame a slow start having bogeyed the third and seventh hole but improved his game after sinking a birdie putt on the sixth hole.
“My last hole was on the second. I hit a nine-iron on the 133-metre par 3 and I put it to three feet and that was my final birdie. I was very happy to make it,” added Zulhilmi who is an alumni of LCB.
He further added, “The 133-metre distance is exactly my nine-iron distance so I had a lot of confidence hitting that shot.”
The golfer, who is no stranger in the local circuit, admitted a slow start but staged
Brunei young talents Awangku Md Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Alli and Mohd Aritz Maldini bin Haji Abdul Majid were the players that he needed to chase with the pair shooting a 71.
“I know I was recovering well when my putt on the 15th for birdie dropped, I was one-under at that point. I told myself if I could get one or more birdie on the remaining five holes that would be enough to win.”
Zul trains four times per week on the golf course and four to five sessions at the driving range. “All the hard work has paid off. I would like to thank BDGA (Brunei Darussalam Golf Association) for their constant support and encouragement.
“Last year, I lost my dad and I lost my cousin this year. I felt they were with me today and my dad would have been so proud I dedicate this win to them.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin presented the prizes.
