THE Brunei Darussalam Pencak Silat Federation (PERSIB) held a technical meeting for the National Teenage Pencak Silat Championship which will be held from today until March 30 at the Indoor Stadium.

The competition, held for the first time, will see the participation of athletes between the ages of 14 and 17.

Vice President I of PERSIB Pengiran Haji Abdul Karim bin Pengiran Haji Metassan addressed the gathering at the meeting.

The participation of invited teams from Labuan and Lawas will provide the locals exposure against overseas athletes.

The competition also aims to enhance closer ties between the local teaching bodies and overseas ones.

Meanwhile, the Head of Competition said that athletes born between 2002 and 2005 are eligible to participate in the championship. The requirements for the athletes are a medical certificate from the doctor and a passport or an identity card to verify the age.

The Head of Competition also briefed on the various classes for both male and female categories.

Athletes must comply with the weight limit for a particular class and higher or lower than the agreed weight will result in disqualification.

Meanwhile, President of PERSIB Pengiran Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Ludin hoped for the competition to run smoothly while urging those who may encounter any concerns to sit down with the secretariat and iron out issues.

The local participants will face competition from neighbouring organisations including the Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS) from Lawas.

The Lawas team will bring seven young athletes including six male athletes who will compete in the tanding event and one in the martial arts event.

The technical meeting, attended by representatives from the local teaching bodies and organisations also saw a review of participation and a draw.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of the championship will be held today with the closing ceremony slated for Saturday night.
