Labour offences uncovered at tyre shop

A number of labour infractions were discovered during a recent inspection of a tyre shop in Gadong under Operasi Selongkar 74/2021.

The inspection was carried out by the Labour Enforcement Division (LED) of the Labour Department, to ensure compliance with the provisions under the Employment Order 2009.

The offences included failure to provide a local employee with an employment contract and the delayed payment of salaries to eight foreign employees.

Failing to provide a written employment contract is a violation of Section 10 of the Employment Order 2009. If convicted, the penalty is a BND600 fine for the first offence and BND900 fine for the second offence.

Meanwhile, delays in the payment of salaries is a violation of Section 39(1) of the Employment Order 2009. If convicted, the penalty is a BND600 fine for the first offence and BND900 fine for the second offence.

The inspection also found that the employer had failed to provide leave and annual leave for employees, which is a violation of Sections 63 and 71 of the Employment Order 2009.

If convicted, the penalty is a compound fine of BND160 for the first offence and BND320 for the second offence.
