THE Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam announced that the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) will be held on April 21 at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Language Centre.

Designed to assess and certify the proficiency of learners of Korean as a foreign language, TOPIK test results can be used as a guideline for placing foreign students into Korean universities or non-native workers into enterprises in Korea or overseas, including Brunei.

TOPIK is eligible to overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their mother tongue; those learning the Korean Language with intentions to apply into Korean universities; those with the intention to join/work for domestic/overseas Korean companies and public organisations; and Koreans who study or graduated overseas.

Applicants can register and submit the following to the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam at the Diplomatic Enclave on Jalan Kebangsaan until Thursday during office hours (except Saturday and Sunday): their application enclosed with a test fee of BND30 for TOPIK I and BND35 for TOPIK II, along with two coloured passport-size photos (3x4cm) and a copy of the applicant’s identity card.

Applicants for the TOPIK I test will need to sit through two sections – Listening (40 minutes with 30 questions) and Reading (60 minutes with 40 questions) – and will be assigned two grades: Grade 1 if they achieve 80 points and above, and Grade 2 for a score of 140 points and above.

For the TOPIK II test, there will be three sections: Listening (60 minutes with 50 questions), Writing (50 minutes with four questions) and Reading (70 minutes with 50 questions). Test takers will be assigned four grades: Grade 3 for 120 points and above, Grade 4 for 150 points and above, Grade 5 for 190 points and above, and Grade 6 for 230 points and above.

In the case where the total number of TOPIK applicants is less than five, the test might be cancelled.

Interested participants can log on to www.topik.go.kr or visit the embassy’s website at http://overseas.mofa.go.kr/bn-en/brd/m_2236/list.do or their Facebook page to get further information.
