Kampong Rataie Mosque claim Zain Cup

KAMPONG Rataie National Housing Scheme Mosque of the Temburong District emerged winners of the Zain Cup after defeating Sultan Sharif Ali Sengkurong Mosque of the Brunei-Muara District 8-7 in penalties at the Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Boys Secondary School yesterday.

After both sides could not be separated in regulation time, penalties were played to decide the winner. There was no separating each other in penalties as well with the exception of both sets of goalkeepers who struck the ball to each other instead.

But it was Kampong Rataie who came out on top despite seeing on one of their spot kicks rattled against the bar before creeping into the net via the goalkeeper in a heart-wrenching moment.

The Temburong-based side also brought home an individual accolade after Md Ali Yusri bin Abdullah scooped the Best Player award.

Zainab Mosque of the Belait District settled for third place after defeating Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah 2-0 who came in fourth.

Meanwhile, the Mosque Affairs Department clinched the Mosque Affairs Director’s Cup after beating the Tutong I Mosque Takmir Committee also through penalties.

Organised by the Mosque Affairs Department with the cooperation of Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, the tournament was held for two days with the first round of matches commencing on January 20. Mosque youth participants have also taken part in religious programmes and have been arranged to spend the night at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.

The religious programmes which have been organised for two days included mass Maghrib, Isyak and Subuh prayers, listening to Subuh and Maghrib lectures and a discussion session.

The tournament was hoped to strengthen closer ties among mosque youth nationwide and guide them to carry out recreational or sporting activities.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof presented the prizes.
