Kajang cops bust online gambling syndicate, arrest 56 foreigners

KAJANG (Bernama) – Police busted an international online gambling syndicate with the arrest of 56 foreigners, eight of them women, in a raid at a condominium unit in Sungai Long.

Kajang District Police Chief ACP Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said based on a tip off and intelligence work, a police team raided the unit at 12.30am.

They found a large group of Chinese nationals in the midst of running an online gambling operation using laptops and handphones.

“None of the suspects, aged between 18 and 56, had valid identification papers and travel documents,” he told reporters at the district police headquarters yesterday.

Ahmad Dzaffir said the syndicate had been running an international online gambling operations for the Canadian, China and Hong Kong markets for the past two months.

The syndicate is believed to have been raking in bets up to 500,000 Yuan (RM300,000) daily while the workers were paid between RM4,000 and RM7,000 a month.

“In the raid, we also seized 30 laptops, 45 handphones, and two Internet modems believed to have been used in their activities,” he said.

He said the suspects were brought to the district police headquarters for further action and were remanded for four days. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) (C), (D) and (E) of the Betting Act 1953.
