The National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) has confirmed the appointment of K Rajagobal as the new head coach of the Brunei Darussalam national football team for a two-year term.

NFABD President Pengiran Haji Matusin bin Pengiran Haji Matasan made the announcement during a press conference at the NFABD House yesterday.

“After several weeks of making assessments in the application for the position of Brunei Darussalam national football team, the Executive Committee of the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam has ruled that NFABD has appointed K Rajagobal from Malaysia as the new head coach for the Brunei Darussalam national football team for a period of two years,” Pengiran Haji Matusin said.

“The decision was made following a series of dialogues having considered technical and financial aspects.”

The NFABD President also shared they received applications from Germany, Serbia and a few applicants from the region.

“It is a hope of NFABD and football followers in the country that K Rajagobal will be able to bring the Brunei Darussalam national football team to a higher level.”

The incoming coach will be guiding the national players to compete in regional or international tournaments, especially in the qualifying round of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

Under the guidance of K Rajagobal as head coach, Malaysia won the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2009 and the AFF Championship in 2010.

“These credentials prompted NFABD to seriously consider K Rajagobal. Nevertheless, other applicants have similar credentials but none have become champions.”

Pengiran Haji Matusin said the national players could benefit from his wealth of experience gained from both his playing and coaching career.

Following Brunei’s stints in the Malaysia Cup in the 90s, Pengiran Haji Matusin said Rajagobal may be familiar to Brunei football and “he is also able to understand the situation of the Brunei players and I am confident that this can be a bonus to prepare them”.

K Rajagobal will be bringing in a coach as part of his coaching team and will also be assisted by local coaches.
