Job seekers should consider entrepreneurship

After graduating from university, I was like other graduates – starry-eyed and eager to enter the workforce and make a mark in the world. However, my high hopes were crushed; I met with rejection after reject in the job market.

Despite being highly-qualified, no one was willing to hire me besides a company that was willing to offer me an apprenticeship position, which I accepted.

I was disheartened by the relentless wave of doors shut on me; but I kept my spirit up.

Perhaps I was not good enough? Perhaps the economy was in a bad shape? Perhaps all opportunities were exhausted?

Eventually, I joined an entrepreneurship boot camp and built on my small business idea.

Due to training and networking, my business has been enjoying success. No longer do I feel pressured to apply for jobs; I am a self-employed individual, earning a decent income. Above all, what I am doing right now actually improves people’s lives.

My message to job seekers, who are struggling to meet societal expectations, is to never ever give up. Be open to apprenticeship and entrepreneurship programmes.

My anecdotal experience may not reflect the entire population, nor is my entrepreneurship route for everyone, but I do hope my story could steer one or two currently facing the same predicament as I did to consider starting a business when all other alternatives have been exhausted.
