“On behalf of the government and the people of Japan, I would like to say some words of encouragement on the occasion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We have been battling the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year.

“Nevertheless, we are going to hold the Tokyo Games 2020 in a safe and secure environment which is also a symbol of global unity overcoming this pandemic.

“The world has united and will ultimately win the battle against this pandemic. We are grateful for the brave decision of Brunei Darussalam to participate in the Games and send young, talented athletes to Tokyo.

“The Government of Japan will take necessary measures to prevent infections and guarantees safe Tokyo Games.

“Coincidentally, this year also marks the 10th year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Thanks to the overwhelming support and contribution from many countries, including Brunei, the people of Japan have been able to rise above this crisis.

“I believe that the Tokyo Games will give us the opportunity to demonstrate how well we have recovered since the earthquake.

“I look forward to seeing all of the athletes compete at their best performance. There is a saying that children are our world’s greatest hope. With the future holding a great many opportunities as well as challenges, it is our mission to work towards passing on our dreams to our children and young people so as to inspire and empower them to face what lies ahead and to build a better tomorrow.

“All the best for Bruneian athletes, Semangat!
