Jail, whippings for cable thieves

The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed jail sentences to five local men after finding them guilty in a trial on charges of theft and mischief.

Acting Senior Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof found them guilty and handed 27 months’ jail with two whippings to Mohammad Shahrul bin Abdullah Teo @ Teo Meng Chai,32, 23 months’ jail to Hazwan bin Abdullah, 35, 17 months’ jail to Mohammad Rafiee bin Zulkipli, 31, 21 months’ jail with two whippings to Ronnie Azrin bin Sain, 28, and 20 months’ jail with two whippings to Sahrool anak Galau, 23.

The court found that Deputy Public Prosecutor Aeny Zullizam had proved the case beyond the court’s reasonable doubt and disbelieved the defendants’ version of the turn of events
in trial.

The prosecution’s case has always been that Mohammad Shahrul, Hazwan and Mohammad Rafiee had stolen an underground cable from Substation Golden Corporation, Sungai Penyatang, Bukit Udal, Tutong District at midnight sometime in January.

They caused damage to the underground cables by cutting them off in the course of theft.

Meanwhile, the same night, Mohammad Shahrul, Ronnie Azrin and Sahrool stole electric cables from two street lights nearby and caused damage by cutting them off.

On handing sentence, the court also took into account all of the defendants having no previous criminal convictions except for Hazwan.
