A Malaysian man was sentenced to 18 months’ jail with three whippings by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to immigration charges.

Samsul bin Jenin, 34, had been barred from entering Brunei for a number of offences earlier when he was arrested by immigration enforcement officers on June 5 at a house in Kampong Peramu.

Inspections led to the discovery of the defendant’s status of having been barred, and entering and residing in the country without a valid pass.

Immigration prosecutor Mohammad Zul Azri bin Haji Ranee revealed that the defendant had re-entered Brunei by boat through Lawas on the first day of Hari Raya on April 22 to visit his mother living in Kampong Ayer.

Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman further heard that the defendant managed to re-enter Brunei illegally despite being repatriated after serving his sentences.
