An Indonesian man was sentenced to 12 months’ jail and three strokes of the cane, for overstaying in the country.
Parjan, 47, pleaded guilty to the charge and admitted to Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid that he had overstayed since September 9, 2016, up to his arrest on September 13, 2020.
Immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra bin Haji Adanan informed court that the defendant was arrested at a restaurant in Jalan Pantai by personnel from the Sungai Liang Police Station, on suspicion of violating immigration laws.
Investigations by the Immigration Enforcement found that the defendant had initially overstayed for a week on August 31, 2016.
The authorities had issued a special pass to him and he last reported himself on September 7, 2016, where he had his special pass extended until the following day.
The defendant then went missing and supported himself during his illegal stay by harvesting coconuts.
