THE International School Brunei (ISB) in the Belait District yesterday witnessed a handover of donated clothing and other basic necessities to a representative of Helping Hands Penan (HHP), a non-government organisation (NGO), in support of the local Penan community.
Year 1 teacher at ISB Kuala Belait Gráinne Dorney said she was delighted with the outcome of continuous effort made by their students who managed to collect various forms of donations throughout the school holidays.
“We try to focus on toiletries, as it is one of the needs of the Penan people; we also have flip-flops, as well as boxes of items, clothing and more, all of which are aimed at aiding the Penan people and also to help enliven their lives with these contributions,” she said.
In addition to the donated items, the students also made a series of posters and cards for the Penans, in a show of solidarity between them and the Penan community.
Dorney also expressed the hope that the drive would inspire more to come in the ensuring years.
“We decided that this year, we are going to go big, and next year, we are going to aim for even bigger,” she added.
Meanwhile, the organisation also intends to aid the Penan community through the promotion and sale of woven baskets made by the tribe.
