I READ with intrigue the reply by the Ministry of Education on the subject Bahasa Melayu 2 PSR paper published in the Opinion page of the Weekend Bulletin on November 3, 2018.
The explanation offered by the Ministry is that some of the questions require “higher order thinking skills” to gauge candidates’ abilities in making “inferences or greater understanding of the passage”.
Given that this issue was initially raised by a teacher representing other teachers of Bahasa Melayu, I wonder if this expectation on the pupils/candidates were cascaded down to the teachers?
From the letter, one can only surmise that this extra skill set is something of a novelty, which has also taken the educators by surprise.
