The Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam recently observed Language Martyr’s Day and International Mother Language Day at its chancery in Sungai Akar.
The event began with the lowering of the Bangladesh national flag to half-mast by High Commissioner-Designate of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona, in the presence of the Bangladeshi community and high commission members.
The high commissioner-designate also laid wreaths on a special stage in honour of the salvation of the souls of the martyrs.
During the event, speeches from the President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh were read.
Shumona also delivered a speech on the importance of commemorating the Language Martyr’s Day and International Mother Language Day.
She also highlighted the role of the ‘Father of the Nation’, former president of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, where with his leadership, Bangladesh achieved independence based on their own language, culture and identity.
