International expertise in higher education still necessary

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman said that a diverse teaching staff, including international lecturers in higher education institutions, are vital in ensuring wider perspective and expertise for local students.

The minister was responding to a query made by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Naim bin Haji Kamis at the 17th LegCo session yesterday, who asked on the progress of succession planning for locals to replace foreign lecturers at higher education institutions such as Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The minister said that a firm succession planning programme of lecturers in higher education institutions in the country to ensure locals are given the same opportunities with contracted international lecturers is still ongoing although he shared that no statistics are yet available.

He also stressed that foreign lecturers are still needed to give local students a wider perspective, allowing them to gain expertise. “Universities also need the foreign workforce with specific expertise to give the local institutions an international reputation,” he added.
