Inspiring new generation of writers through contests

James Kon

The Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) continuously provides opportunities for people of all ages to improve creative and non-creative writing skills through various platforms including writing workshops, contests and competitions, publishing books, magazines and journals.

This was said by DBP Acting Director Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab at the prize presentation ceremony for creative and non-creative literature writing competitions organised by its Literature and Magazine Division yesterday.

He said, “Alhamdulillah, the competitions have become platforms to attract young writers, especially in producing quality creative and non-creative works.

Insya Allah, the bureau will continue to organise more contests to further encourage the involvement of the younger generation to produce writers,” he added.

The competitions were Mekar Naindung Essay Writing Competition and Juara Pelajar magazine 2021/2022, Short Story Writing and Literature Critics for Malay Language Magazine of the DBP 2021-2022 and Ilmiah Pangsura Essay Writing Contest.

The three competitions – the children, youth and adult levels – aim to promote magazines and journals published by the DBP and raise reading interest among the younger generation to encourage them to venture into the world of writing. Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan presented the prizes to the winners.
