Inspire Karate Club from Sabah emerged as overall champion in the Rengokai Karate Open Championship 2022 organised by the Rengokai Karate Brunei Darussalam and sanctioned by the Brunei Darussalam Karate Federation (BRUKAF) at the Youth Centre in the capital yesterday.
The Sabah contingent amassed a haul of nine gold, 12 silver and seven bronze medals, followed by Shotokan Karate Brunei Darussalam, one of the clubs under BRUKAF, with a tally of nine gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals.
Rengokai Karate Brunei Darussalam, who were the organisers, came third with four gold, two silver and 12 bronze medals.
A total of 116 athletes involving clubs from Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak participated in the three-day tournament.
The categories comprised children from seven to 13 years across various age groups, cadets (14-15), junior (16-17) and Under-21 (18-21 years).
The tournament served as a platform to prepare participants for upcoming domestic and foreign tournaments. The meet also helped foster friendly ties especially between Brunei and foreign exponents.
Deputy Director of Youth and Sports Department Haji Mohd Rosfazillah bin Haji Yusly presented the prizes.
