Innovation is about thinking differently, says acting dean

Innovation isn’t just about the latest technology – it’s about thinking differently, solving real-world problems, and having the courage to dream big, said Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Acting Dean of the Faculty of Technology Dr Hajah Tiawa binti Haji Hamid at the university’s Innovation Day 2025 yesterday.

“With such spirit, we can continue to grow in knowledge, support our society, and guide the next generation of thinkers and innovators.”

The acting dean reflected on the rich Islamic legacy of knowledge and discovery – a legacy rooted in the Islamic Golden Age, where Muslim scholars were not only brilliant thinkers but also inventors, scientists, engineers and visionaries. “Many of their groundbreaking contributions laid the foundations for today’s modern technology, including the development of artificial intelligence (AI).” Among the inspiring figures she highlighted were Al-Khawarizmi, Al-Jazari, Ibn Sina, Al-Kindi and Al-Farabi. These scholars, she added, were motivated not only by a deep love for knowledge but also by faith and purpose.

Their work serves as proof that science and Islam go hand-in-hand – and that when innovation is guided by strong values, it can become a force for good that truly benefits humanity.

She also expressed her pride in the minds, dedicated researchers and students who carry this spirit forward – individuals who continue to share ideas, develop projects and envision a better tomorrow.

“Let today be a platform for collaboration, exploration and meaningful conversations. May we leave this event feeling inspired, more connected and ready to turn ideas into action – guided by our Islamic heritage and a global sense of responsibility,” said Dr Hajah Tiawa. – Lyna Mohamad
