    Inflation down 0.5pc in April

In April 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) registered a month-on-month decrease of 0.5 per cent compared to March due to a fall in food and non-alcoholic beverages prices; and non-food prices by 0.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.

The month-on-month decrease in the food and non-alcoholic beverages prices was attributed by a fall in prices of vegetables (four per cent); fish and seafood (1.2 per cent); and meat (0.4 per cent). Meanwhile, the fall in the prices of non-food was contributed by the decrease in the prices of clothing and footwear (11.3 per cent); furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (1.1 per cent); and miscellaneous goods and services (0.9 per cent).

For year-on-year changes, the CPI increased by 0.2 per cent compared to April 2022. The rise was driven by an increase in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages by 2.8 per cent. However, the non-food prices registered a decrease of 0.5 per cent.

The year-on-year increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages prices was due to the rise in rice and cereals (6.4 per cent); meat (3.8 per cent); and fish and seafood (3.6 per cent).

The increase in rice and cereals prices was mainly driven by the rise in prices of raw materials on biscuit products. The rise in meat prices, particularly chicken meat, was contributed by the rising cost of chicken feed. Meanwhile, a rise in fish and seafood prices was due to the decreased availability of fresh prawns.

The year-on-year increase was moderated by a decrease in non-food prices, particularly, clothing and footwear (six per cent); communication (three per cent); and transport (2.2 per cent).
