Indonesian landslide death toll rises to 15

JAKARTA (Bernama) – Rescuers are continuing their search for 20 missing people at the site of a landslide in Sukabumi, western Java, as the death toll from the calamity rose to 15 yesterday.

The search was stopped temporarily at 2pm (3pm Malaysian time) on Tuesday because of heavy rain, according to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management.

The Head of its Information Data and Public Relations Centre Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement that four more landslides occurred in the area on Tuesday.

The first landslide, at 5.30pm on December 31, 2018, buried a settlement of 30 houses in Sukabumi, he said, adding that two bodies were pulled out of the rubble on the same day and 13 bodies were recovered on Tuesday.

The settlement was home to 107 people, of whom 15 were killed and 20 are missing, he said.
