THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a foreign man to jail for three months with three whippings for overstaying in Brunei Darussalam.

An Indonesian man Imam Maskur, 37, was found hiding inside a chicken coop at the back of a house in Kampong Dadap, Jalan Kilanas during an inspection which was part of an operation conducted by the Immigration Enforcement dubbed Operasi Cantas JIPK 123/2018 at midnight on June 12. Authorities checked the defendant’s passport and found no evidence of the defendant legally entering Brunei.

The last entry on the defendant’s passport showed he exited Brunei on April 8, 2015.

Investigations revealed that the defendant entered Brunei without producing his passport at the border through Sungai Tujoh by foot sometime in May 2015. He has overstayed for 494 days following his expired visit pass.

Immigration prosecutor Pengiran Norarrfin bin Pengiran Haji Hashim prosecuted the case. Senior Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah binti Haji Mohd Hussain presided over the case.
