The implementation of the Brunei Darussalam Financial Literacy Competency Framework for School Children and Adults will be carried out in stages said Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin.
She made these comments at the launch of the framework by the Minister of Education and Chairman of the National Financial Literacy Council Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman yesterday.
The framework acts as a reference for all levels of society to increase knowledge and skills for orderly and systematic financial management, with the aim of achieving financial independence.
The framework is also in line with the goal of Brunei Vision 2035 to have highly educated and skilled people, improve the quality of life of the people as well as more sustainable economic growth.
The initial stage begins with providing reference material for the primary level (Year 1 to Year 6) and will be followed by a reference and guidance book for Secondary level in 2022. The reference book for adults will also be used as a reference for students in higher education and the public.
Dr Shamsiah urged teachers to make use of the materials when educating students on financial management. She said the reference books can improve a school’s curriculum by inserting the concept of financial literacy suitable with the student’s age.
After the launch, the minister presented copies of the framework to the steering committee members and certificates of appreciation to the working committee members. The minister also witnessed a mini exhibition on the process of producing the framework.
Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh; Financial Literacy Council members; permanent secretary (Higher Education); deputy permanent secretaries; heads of departments and senior officials of Ministry of Education and other ministries were also present.
