IBTE scholars look forward to new chapter

Twenty-one Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) scholars pursuing a Diploma in Refinery Operator under the Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd and IBTE Joint Scholarship Programme headed to Lanzhou Petrochemical University of Vocational Technology (LPUVT) to continue their studies.

“I feel honoured to have been chosen for this scholarship to study at LPUVT,” said Muhammad Fahmi bin Khairussyakirin, one of the IBTE scholars departing for Lanzhou.

“It is quite scary to travel far from my family and live in a different environment. Nonetheless, I will work hard to fulfil my responsibility as a son and proud citizen of Brunei Darussalam.”

Wong Kah Yung, another scholar, expressed his excitement on the journey ahead.

“I am very excited as it is a dream every student can ever ask for. A great opportunity that can make me truly more independent as a person and student. Most importantly, I can experience another studying environment and meeting new friends. I am excited for what lies ahead for me,” he said.

Also sharing their excitement was Allysha Sim Yao Ching, who said, “The excitement in me going to LPUVT is that I have the chance to get more knowledge and cultivate my own skills in the course that I’m taking.

“While it is scary as I have to leave my own safe haven which includes leaving my home and parents, I’m truly grateful to be given this opportunity.”

Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo, Hengyi Industries’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chen Lian Cai and CEO and Director of IBTE Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli were present at the send-off ceremony to bid farewell to the scholars.

On September 14, the students were the fifth batch to be awarded scholarships under the Hengyi Industries, IBTE and LPUVT Joint Scholarship Programme.

Established in 2018, the programme is part of Hengyi’s Future-Ready Initiative to empower local talents with the knowledge and skills required to become future leaders of the Petrochemical industry.

The Joint Scholarship Programme offers a three-year Diploma in Refinery Operator course, with one year of academic study at IBTE Jefri Bolkiah Campus, one year of study with LPUVT in Lanzhou, and one year of industrial training (on-the-job) with Hengyi Industries at Pulau Muara Besar. Upon completion of the course, the scholars will join Hengyi Industries and begin their career in the petrochemical industry.
