Homegrown grapes, anyone?

Azlan Othman

Growing grapes is a lucrative investment for Norsalina binti Abdullah who grows the fruit at her rented house in Kampong Pengkalan Batu. She started cultivating it about one and a half year ago, after obtaining seedlings from other growers.

The Weekend Bulletin met her at the Ilal Hijrah roadshow organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on Thursday. The event highlighted the migration and success of some of the tithe (Zakat) recipients comprising the poor and destitute as well as Muslim converts, who have succeeded in developing themselves in terms of socio-economic and education as a source of inspiration to others.

“Initially, it was just a trial whether grapes could be cultivated in a tropical climate and it did,” she said, adding that the Mediterranean fruit needs a lot of attention because of its temperate nature.
