His Majesty conferred AFEO Distinguished Honorary Patron Award

The Governing Board of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO), comprising Heads of AFEO member organisations, unanimously agreed to nominate His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for the AFEO Distinguished Honorary Patron Award.

His Majesty has consented to receive the award.

The award is conferred in recognition of the achievements and remarkable social, economic and engineering development of Brunei Darussalam under His Majesty’s wise leadership.

The AFEO Distinguished Honorary Patron Award is the most prestigious and highest AFEO award and is only conferred on those reigning heads of state and heads of government of acknowledged eminence and high standing, who have rendered very substantial and outstanding services and contributions to the engineering profession, AFEO and the ASEAN Community.

The conferment was announced at the Opening Ceremony of the 39th Conference of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO 39) hosted by Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA) Brunei from November 29 to December 3.

CAFEO 39 is held virtually with the opening ceremony organised at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in a hybrid format attended by both local and international participants, including heads of ASEAN engineering organisations virtually.

Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar officiated the opening of CAFEO 39 and delivered a keynote address.

The opening ceremony also saw the conferment of the AFEO Distinguished Honorary Fellow and AFEO Honorary Fellow awards by PUJA Brunei President and AFEO Chairman Ir Haji Mohammad Zin bin Haji Salleh. These awards are conferred to distinguished persons of exemplary character who have rendered substantial, outstanding and meritorious services to the engineering profession, the Institution and the ASEAN nations.

AFEO Distinguished Honorary Fellow recipient is Minister of Energy Dato Seri Setia Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein.

Meanwhile, AFEO Honorary Fellow awards recipients are Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar; Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri Setia Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof; Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin; Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy) Dato Paduka Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin; and Deputy Minister of Development Dato Seri Paduka Ar Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin.

Other recipients are Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, and Decommissioning and Restoration Manager Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Haji Idris Mohd Jaafar.

The event also saw three keynote addresses by Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mat Suny; Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah and Secretary General of Ministry of Environment and Water, Malaysia Dato’ Seri Ir Dr Zaini bin Ujang.

Over the next few days, CAFEO 39 will see various activities including AFEO Governing Board Meeting, Working Group Meetings, Technical Paper Presentations, Country Report Presentations, Energy Forum, Young Engineers Dialogue, Women Engineers Summit 2021 and ASEAN Engineering Outstanding Achievement Awards on December 3.

This year’s theme, ‘Engineering and Climate Change’ was chosen because climate change remains as the biggest challenge of the 21st Century.
