A total of 13,246 individuals have received treatment for mental health issues this year
The Knowledge Convention 2024, themed “Addressing Mental Symptoms,” highlighted the growing prevalence of mental health issues both nationally and globally. In Brunei Darussalam, a total of 13,246 individuals have received treatment for mental health concerns this year, compared to 11,231 in the previous year.
In a titah during the convention’s opening on Wednesday, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, expressed deep concern over the rise in mental health challenges, which have affected not only the public but also civil servants and school students. His Majesty urged stakeholders across the nation to take decisive action in addressing the issue.
His Majesty stressed that individuals suffering from mental disorders often experience emotional and cognitive disturbances, which can strain their social relationships and daily functioning. Emphasising the importance of mental well-being, His Majesty pointed out that a healthy mind enables individuals to manage emotions and lead fulfilling lives. Conversely, mental illness can hinder one’s ability to cope with life’s challenges.
In line with Islamic teachings, His Majesty reminded the nation that both physical and mental health are blessings from Allah the Almighty, and safeguarding these gifts aligns with the objectives of Maqasid Syariah.
His Majesty acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle mental health issues, noting the increase in psychological officers and the extension of Talian Harapan 145—the mental health helpline—to 24-hour availability. These measures are crucial in providing continuous support for those in need.
His Majesty also expressed hope that collaboration between health and religious authorities will continue, recognising the integrated efforts of various parties, including government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). One such initiative is the Workplace Mental Health Roadshow, which educates ministries and departments on mental health from both Islamic and scientific perspectives.
Further reflecting on current initiatives, His Majesty noted that one of the key actions in the National Mental Health Action Plan 2022-2025 is the Basic Mental Health Training Programme for community leaders, specifically for imams, ustaz, and dai’e. This programme, a collaboration between health and religious authorities, combines scientific treatment with spiritual guidance.
However, His Majesty advised that the effectiveness of such programmes must be continuously monitored, and adjustments made if necessary to ensure the best outcomes for mental health care in the country.
In his closing remarks, His Majesty called on family members and society at large to take responsibility and play an active role in supporting those facing mental health challenges during their recovery journey. – ROKIAH MAHMUD
