His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam highlighted the importance of conducting research and evaluation, including how the coronavirus outbreak was effectively controlled in the country, yesterday.

In a pre-recorded titah during a gathering at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque for this year’s Knowledge Convention, His Majesty said, “It would be significant if the study and evaluation were able to identify some benefits (hikmah) from the incident.

“All that comes from Allah the Almighty has its benefits. Accordingly, they need to be understood and studied. Even a little knowledge about the benefits is capable of providing us with enlightenment and awareness.”

The monarch said, “In keeping with the theme of this year’s Knowledge Convention, Mensyukuri Ni’mat Kesihatan Sebagai Anugerah Allah, we should not forget to thank Allah the Almighty for His grace in saving us and the country from the outbreak.

“This theme is quite relevant for discussion among academics, health experts, physicians, and scholars. It is undeniably essential, because health is such a precious gift from Allah the Almighty.

“In conformity with the demands of our faith, this is the time for all parties to be committed on health issues, as it is considered as one of the ways of preventing an outbreak.”

His Majesty added, “I have always hoped that the Knowledge Convention would be able to drive religious and social awareness. I see it as capable of playing a specific role in the field of knowledge and propagation, especially when forums or seminars and talks are conducted as part of the events.

“This is, without question, a platform for the spread of knowledge and propagation.

“I am optimistic that the Knowledge Convention is capable of creating a vision and mission that is advantageous for the country. Thus, it is befitting that it should be held every year, so that we may reap the benefits.

“Finally, I pray that all those involved in making this event a success and will always be blessed with good health so that they can continue to serve the country,” said His Majesty, concluding the titah.

Meanwhile, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Co-Chairperson of the Steering Committee of Knowledge Convention 2020 Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud said, “Alhamdulillah, with the wise leadership of His Majesty, this year’s Knowledge Convention is organised in a different format, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health on limiting public gatherings, due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the integrated efforts of various parties, this Knowledge Convention is not only followed via live radio and television broadcasts, but also through Radio Television Brunei’s (RTB) social media live streaming platforms.

“This Knowledge Convention forms part of our sovereign’s birthday celebrations, as well as a testament to His Majesty’s intellectual leadership as an Islamic leader who emphasises the importance of knowledge. It also serves as a platform of knowledge and information which is beneficial for the people of Brunei Darussalam.”
