Hefty fines for contraband possession

The Magistrate’s Court ordered a local woman and man to settle BND29,000 and BND21,200 in fines respectively yesterday.

Arinah binti Ali, 54, would have to serve 15 months’ jail in default of payment after she pleaded guilty to possession of 13 cartons and 20 packets of cigarettes while 20-year-old Nur Fahmi bin Haji Mohd Jawie a 13 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to possessing 17 cartons and a packet of cigarettes as well as 90 boxes and two units of vape pods.

Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman who sat in the Tutong courthouse, heard that Arinah was found in possession of the cigarettes at her home in Kampong Telisai, Tutong District during an inspection conducted by Customs preventive officers at 3.59pm on August 22, 2022.

Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid, sitting in the Kuala Belait court, was told that Customs preventive officers inspected Nur Fahmi’s house in Jalan Pandan 5, Kuala Belait at 4.02pm on July 27, 2022 where the contraband was found.
