To emphasise the crucial role of effective communication and collaboration among healthcare providers in preventing diagnostic errors, Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) and Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) jointly commemorated World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) yesterday. The theme for this year’s WPSD is ‘Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety’, with the slogan ‘Get it right, Make it safe!’
Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar attended in his capacity as Chairman of JPMC and PJSC as well as Executive Director of JPMC. Senior management and staff from both institutions were also in attendance.
To further enhance their commitment to patient care, JPMC and PJSC launched a joint initiative to provide home testing devices, such as glucometers and blood pressure monitors, to patients in need. This initiative empowers patients to take charge of their health through self-monitoring.
In addition to the device donations, educational videos and leaflets on home testing devices were launched to provide patients with the knowledge and skills. By providing affordable testing strips and conducting hands-on demonstrations during home visits, the initiative aims to ensure long-term sustainability of self-monitoring efforts.
“Errors in diagnosis can have severe consequences,” said Head of Quality and Patient Safety at JPMC and PJSC Jeffry Damit. “By prioritising accurate and timely diagnosis, we can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce preventable harm.”
To further enhance patient safety, PJSC has implemented a new policy on critical result reporting, aligned with Joint Commission International’s (JCI) International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG).
JPMC has also appointed chapter leaders and co-leaders to spearhead the organisation’s efforts toward JCI re-accreditation, with a focus on patient safety. – James Kon
