Haze to gradually decline in coming days

    James Kon

The slight to moderate haze situation is expected to continue and is likely to gradually decline around the weekend or early next week due to changes in the wind direction, according to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD).

The department in a release stated Brunei is experiencing the southwest monsoon, where the wind generally blows from the southwest direction.

No cyclone or tropical storm is detected in the region at present, the release added.

Meanwhile, dry weather will continue in most of the southern ASEAN region with clusters of hot spots being detected in the region (see illustration).

Smoke from the haze is blown by the southwest wind towards Brunei. The national wind stream is likely to change to direction towards the northeast or east around the weekend, according to the numerical weather forecast model. Meanwhile, the Brunei International Airport Weather Observation Station recorded visibility distances between three and four kilometres, compared to visibility distances of above 10km during good weather, for the past 24 hours because of the haze.

Members of the public are urged to be updated about the weather condition and take precautionary measures during the haze.

The BDMD said it will continue to monitor the weather condition and issue an advisory or warnings if needed.

The BDMD also stated updates on the weather are available through www.met.gov.bn or Facebook (@bruneiweather), Instagram (@bruneiweather), and Brunei WX mobile application.

The public can also contact the Duty Meteorological Forecaster at the Weather Line 114.

The latest regional haze map (updated September 18, 2019 at 7.16pm) was published by ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), showing a group of hotspots especially at west and south of Borneo Island.
