Qari Mohammad bin Ali and Qariah Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Haji Marjuki were announced the winners of the National Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults 1441 Hijrah/2020 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas on Thursday.

On his preparations, he shared, “I have my own training in reading Al-Quran, sometimes with my friends and with a skilled tutor.
“We also attended a workshop organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA),” he said. Mohammad participated and represented Brunei Darussalam in several competitions including in Malaysia, Indonesia and Russia, where he emerged as a champion in 2015.
“There is not much difference in preparations for the competitions. The most important aspect is health as it plays a beneficial role in our performance,” he said.As an education officer, he shared that he had to divide his time between working and training. He also shared a few words of advice to youth, urging them to read and learn Al-Quran, not only for competitions but also for themselves.
Meanwhile, Qariah Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana expressed her gratitude to Allah the Almighty for her achievement.
Her journey in the annual National Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults began in 2018, and this year marked her third time participating. It was beyond her expectations to win the competition. “I started when I was nine and participated in competitions through religious school and secondary school. I continued to join the competitions in youth category and now, in adult category, Alhamdulillah,” she said.
Sharing the key to her feat, she said, “First is to not be complacent after what you’ve achieved, to keep learning from skilled tutors and to educate ourselves to read Al-Quran and practice it on a daily basis and seek blessings from Allah the Almighty.”
With the competition, she hopes to gain more experience and knowledge in Tarannum and in Al-Quran as a whole to help her improve further.
Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana is an active participant in Al-Quran reading competitions and she was a Qariah champion of the 9th Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition last year. She also took part in several competitions and represented Brunei Darussalam in Kuala Lumpur under MABIMS. This year’s National Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults saw 12 participants comprising six Qaris and six Qariahs.
