Germany, auto industry face ‘Herculean’ climate task, says Merkel

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany’s auto industry and the country as a whole face a “Herculean task” meeting the goals set for combating climate change.

Speaking yesterday at the official opening of the Frankfurt Motor Show, Merkel noted that unlike other areas of the economy emissions of greenhouse gases from Germany’s transport sector have remained unchanged since 1990 despite increasingly efficient vehicles.

Merkel insisted that some form of carbon pricing will be needed if Germany is to cut its emissions by 40 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

Bernhard Mattes, head of Germany’s automaker lobby group VDA, said industry favours capping the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere via a national or European emissions trading system.
