Funding for regional COVID genome project secured

The ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (ASEAN COSTI) agreed to fund the ASEAN COVID Genomics Project and the ASEAN-Wide Anti-COVID-19 Sero-Surveillance Study.

This was agreed during the 80th ASEAN COSTI Meeting on October 12-13 via video conference. The meeting also agreed to realign the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) initiatives to the mid-term review of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2025.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) Haji Mohd Nazri bin Haji Mohd Yusof attended the meeting.

Dr Jimmy Lim Chee Ming from Universiti Brunei Darussalam as the Chairman of the Board of Advisers to COSTI (BAC), presented the report of the 11th Meeting Board of Advisers to ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (BAC-11).

Also discussed during the meeting was the judging session to select the winners of the Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Prize for Women in Science where the applicants were evaluated based on their academic contributions to the theme ‘Clean Water, Clean Air’, as well as their efforts to mentor other women scientists.

Also present during the meeting was Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications) at MTIC Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim and accompanied by senior officials
at MTIC.
