Fun-filled events at JIS Peace Week

Jerudong International School (JIS) celebrated Peace Week from September 16-20.

It is an annual event filled with education, artistic and recreational events for the school, held in conjunction with United Nations’ International Day of Peace which is observed today.

The event at the school, themed ‘Togetherness and Community’, was coordinated by the Senior School Council.

Senior students attended the Charity Chat Show on Tuesday. The show invited local non-governmental agencies La Vida, the Lions Club, Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei and Bugtaw who shared their roles to help the community.  The event was hosted by Head Girl Alex Norris and Deputy Head Boy Thomas Conway.

The week commenced with activities such as peace themed chalk-paintings and videos in tutor groups and a Handball Festival.

Peace Day ceremony was led by Head Boy Sheng Kai Wong and Alex Norris on Wednesday.

Student wore sunset colours and reflected on the true meaning of Peace Day.

They also enjoyed a Peace Day festival with invited food vendors including Fuel’d, Potato Habit, Sugar & Spice, and Fratinis.

A number of activities including face painting, games, and sponging murals were also held.

The week ended in a peace-themed assembly led by the student leadership team as well as a coastal beach clean-up led by the Eco JIS team at Jerudong Beach.

The Junior School also took part in a number of activities during the celebration. The Junior School children prepared colourful geometric designs during art lessons for a wall mural in the Primary Assembly Room.

JIS Principal Nicholas Sheehan said, “Peace Week is a unique and special week at JIS. It is an important part of our school calendar where students are challenged to stop and reflect on different aspects of peace.

“This year’s theme enables us to teach our students, who come from diverse nationalities and cultures, the importance of valuing each other and how to live alongside each other, make deep friendships with each other and appreciate their differences. I am always struck by how apt it is to celebrate Peace Day in Brunei Darussalam – the abode of peace.”

The International Day of Peace encourages people around the world to reflect upon the meaning of peace and how conflict affects lives globally. This year is the 20th anniversary of the establishment of International Day of Peace.

A total of 193 countries have now formally signed up for this event.
