YESTERDAY’S Friday sermon encouraged all Brunei citizens and residents to give thanks to Allah the Almighty for Brunei’s independent status.

“Independence is not only a blessing, but also a test for us. If we treat it with disregard, indifference or ingratitude, then it would not be unreasonable for this blessing to be taken away anytime,” said Imams during the sermon.

“It is not easy to achieve independence, as there are certain countries that have achieved independence but far from gaining the true meaning of it. It is a priceless gift that cannot be measured by any monetary or material means.”

The sermon also reminded Bruneians of their responsibility in upholding the meaning of independence, “Such blessings come from Allah the Almighty for the purpose of strengthening the religion and placing it in a superior position.

“Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, we are practising a lifestyle based on Islamic teachings in all aspects; and we deeply embrace these teachings, so that our nation will continue to abide in peace, harmony and under a strong religious faith,” the Imams said.
