THE French Embassy in Brunei Darussalam hosted a reception at The Empire Hotel & Country Club to celebrate the 230th French National Day or Bastille Day on Friday night.
The guest of honour who represented the government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar. He was accompanied by his spouse, Datin Dr Hajah Noraslinah binti Haji Ramlee.
The ceremony began with the singing of the national anthems of Brunei Darussalam and France by primary students of Stella’s School.
Ambassador of France to Brunei Darussalam Christian Ramage highlighted that France is also celebrating the 130th birthday of Eiffel Tower, which has become a symbol of the country this year.
“The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. By celebrating the Eiffel Tower’s 130th birthday, we commemorate the 230th anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower symbolises France, the French Republic and its values,” he said.
He also conveyed birthday greetings for His Majesty’s 73rd birthday celebration.
Key government officials, members of the foreign Diplomatic Corps, members of the French Brunei Business Association, and representatives from French companies based in Brunei were also present.
Guests were treated to authentic French cuisines served throughout the reception.
