    Four months’ jail, BND500 fine for overstaying Indonesian

    A 50-year-old Indonesian woman who overstayed in the Sultanate was sentenced to four months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

    Nofi Emiliawati was ordered to settle a BND500 fine or serve another month in jail in default of payment.

    Immigration prosecutor Mohd Zul Azri Haji Ranee informed Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner that the defendant came under the immigration enforcement scrutiny during an inspection at her rented home in Jalan Mejawa, Kampong Jerudong at 4.20am on January 19.

    Officers discovered that the defendant was staying in the country on an expired social visit pass for the past 413 days.

    Record showed the defendant first entered the country through Labu Control Post, Temburong District on January 29, 2020.

    She was given a two weeks’ visit pass and sought extension up to December 2, 2020.

    Investigators confirmed that the defendant had not updated her immigration status since then.

    The defendant said she had been working as a freelance maid earning between BND20 to 25 for a day’s work, which she would pay BND80 monthly for her rented place.
