The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) announced that four Bruneian students in Egypt were found to be COVID-19 positive. This was based on information from the Education and Cultural Attache’ of the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Egypt.
This was announced by Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman yesterday.
The minister said all Bruneian students in Cairo underwent swab tests in phases and ordered to self-isolate at their residence. Fifteen students have taken swab tests.
MoRA, the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Brunei Embassy are closely monitoring the situation.
The minister said the COVID positive students did not develop any symptoms and are in good condition.
Students in Egypt are urged to adhere to standard operating procedures and advised to update officers supervising them in the country.
Parents, guardians and families of the students are urged to not be alarmed by the news.
Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said Egypt is currently in the third wave of COVID-19 where close to 240,000 cases have been recorded with 13,000 deaths.
The Minister of Religious Affairs said there are 196 students studying in Egypt but are currently in Brunei. They will sit for examinations online next month and some will sit for Hafazan Al-Quran later this month.
Efforts are being made to postpone the exams like in the previous semester.
Islamic Studies Department said that out of the 30 Bruneian students currently in Egypt, 28 are at Al-Azhar University and two are studying medicine at Alexandria University.
