Forum highlights ASEAN formation

THE forum on ‘ASEAN’ was held at St James’ School, Kuala Belait on September 22. The event commenced with Surah Al-Fatihah led by Muhammad Aiman Haiqal bin Haji Norahmadi, one of the participants from Year 10 followed by the introduction from the members of Information Department, Prime Minister’s Office.

The speakers enlightened the participants regarding the formation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN, on August 8, 1967 with the founding member countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. Brunei Darussalam joined the association at January 7, 1984, right after achieving its independence.

ASEAN stands by the motto, ‘One Vision, One Identity, One Community’ and abide to support each other as their principles. This seminar not only highlighted about Brunei but also the other members of ASEAN. The participants from Years 7, 9 and 10 were given the opportunity to know more about ASEAN, its origin, and their sense of belonging.

The forum was conducted by Mufidah Binti Abdul Hakim, the Head of International Affairs Unit at the Information Department.
