An Indonesian man will learn of his fate on September 30, after he pleaded guilty to attacking and threatening to kill his former girlfriend in a fit of jealousy.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazwani binti Jumat revealed in the Intermediate Court that Dedi Sutrisno had been seeing the 49-year-old local woman during his period of employment in Brunei, which began in 2016.
He was repatriated earlier this year, but after returning to Brunei on August 14, he made several unsuccessful attempts to reconnect with the victim. Then he learned that she had declared their relationship over, after claiming he was unfaithful to her.
On September 1, the defendant formed an idea, seeing that he had always held the spare keys to the victim’s house and car.
Borrowing a friend’s car, he made his way to the victim’s house, where he unlocked her car and then sat in the driver’s seat. When the victim and her new boyfriend appeared, they were alarmed to see the defendant waiting for them.
The defendant brandished a kitchen knife towards the victim’s boyfriend, causing him to flee from the scene.
The defendant attempted to chase him, but was held back by the victim, who grasped at his shirt. A scuffle then ensued, as the defendant strangled the victim and banged her head against the ground.
He also pointed the knife towards the victim, threatening to kill her for being with another man. When the victim tried to take the knife away from him, she sustained an injury to one of her hands.
A police patrol passing through the neighbourhood arrested the defendant.
Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Haji Kefli presided over the case.
